It is a legal requirement to have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) for properties both domestic and non-domestic when constructed, sold or let. The EPC provides details on the energy performance of the property and what you can do to improve it.
Energy Performance Certificates present the energy efficiency of dwellings on a scale of A to G. The most efficient homes/buildings - which should have the lowest fuel bills - are in band A. The certificate uses the same scale to define the impact a home / building has on the environment. The average property in the UK is in band D or E for both ratings.
In April 2012 new legislation was introduced which required all Domestic Energy Assessors within England and Wales to undertake additional training in order to produce the new EPC. The new style EPC now takes into consideration the Green Deal and is an in depth assessment of the Energy Performance of the property.
